The barrier islands run parallel to the coastline along the Atlantic shore and comprise a large part of the coastal habitat. With year-round temperature ranges of about 40° average in winter to about 75° in the summer, the Chincoteague and Assateague Islands are an ideal destination for vacations year round.

The islands shelter much wildlife and in particular the Chincoteague Ponies, White-tailed deer, Sika elk, Red fox and more than 250 species of raptors, songbirds, and shorebirds, which hunt and forage for food in the adjacent bays and salt marshes. Beginning in mid September migratory birds stop by on their way south. The forested Assateague Island and the Chincoteague Refuge provides habitat for millions of migrating songbirds. Winter brings Migrating geese from the arctic, black ducks and brant. Beginning in late April through May sandpipers cover the beaches and the shallow tidal flats, fattening themselves up for their flight to arctic nesting grounds.
